Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE)
SQE Book
Skilfully Passing the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) helps qualified lawyers, aspiring solicitors and students prepare for and pass the exam.
From start to finish it provides practical guidance, tips and tools; from choosing a course provider, through to how to be admitted to the Roll of Solicitors.
The SQE is heavily based on the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS), now abolished, so already an established format. This essential title will help you understand the exam, how to prepare for it and ensure what you learn will also benefit you in practice.
Complementing your academic study materials, it provides insight and understanding of what you can expect from doing the SQE. It offers practical solutions around questions and challenges when studying and practising for SQE Part 1 and Part 2, such as:
- What strategies will help you with the multiple choice tests?
- How do you deal with emotional/vulnerable clients?
- What do you do when you cannot answer your client’s or the judge’s question?
- How can you maximise your chances of scoring the highest marks?
Skilfully Passing the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is an essential textbook for universities, training providers, law firms, businesses and individuals. It teaches you how to explain the law and legal principles in a clear and concise manner which directly links to how you hone your communication skills to deliver a confident performance.
The SQE book is available from Bloomsbury or online retailers such as Amazon (as an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases).
The first thing to say is that the author, Neeta Halai, is clearly an expert as she is able to make a complex, challenging and novel subject interesting, straightforward and digestible.
All SQE students should invest in this book as it will ably support them, step by step, through this labyrinthine journey and, if they follow Neeta’s wise words of advice, should stand them in excellent stead to skilfully pass the SQE.

This is an excellent book that I would recommend for students looking for a general overview of SQE with some really helpful and practical suggestions and examples for studying and exam technique.
The book is particularly useful to support students preparing for SQE2, as it goes into the legal skills in some detail… Students will find this book incredibly useful as a study aid, alongside their SQE course textbook.

The Commonwealth Lawyer
With practical tips and tools, this book targets aspiring solicitors, qualified lawyers in foreign jurisdictions and students. As well as offering solutions to questions and challenges when studying and practising your skills for assessments, this book aims to be insightful and practical, rather than merely theoretical.
The Law Society Gazette
I will recommend it to my students as a text to help them with their overall approach for [the SQE]… Students who are worried about the exam…would benefit greatly.

The SQE2 bespoke services are for the SQE Part 2 only. They are tailored to each individual who wants to invest in 1:1 performance coaching with Neeta Halai or participate in small group masterclasses for the oral assessments. Please read the SQE2 Bespoke Services brochure which details all the different options and prices.
The SQE is based heavily on the QLTS (now abolished) and the format and standard have not changed. Neeta Halai has coached many clients for the SQE2 and has not changed her approach. Therefore, you can be confident that the mixture of testimonials for the QLTS (OSCE) and SQE are equally relevant to what you can expect from working with Neeta Halai.

SQE Exam
The SQE exam is one exam split into two parts. You will need to pass both parts will need to be passed (unless you are exempt) to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales.
SQE Part 1 – Functional Legal Knowledge Assessments
This part assesses your knowledge of the law covering the substantive and procedural subjects. There are a lot of subjects to learn: think of it as the core LLB/GDL subjects and the LPC subjects combined. You are assessed on all the law upfront so there is no new law to learn for SQE Part 2.
- Two Multiple Choice Tests (split over two days)
- 360 Multiple Choice Questions (180 questions per day)
- Approximately 5 hours per day
SQE Part 2 – Practical Legal Skills Assessments
There are 16 oral and written assessments that make up the way your legal skills will be assessed. You will do four oral assessments and twelve written assessments (all computer-based) which are equally assessed on the law and skills.
You will be assessed in the following five practice areas of the law:
- Criminal Practice
- Dispute Resolution
- Property Practice
- Wills and Probate
- Business Law
The six legal skills you are assessed on are:
Oral Assessments
- Client Interviewing Skills (including a handwritten attendance note)
- Advocacy
Written Assessments
- Case and matter analysis
- Legal writing
- Legal drafting
- Legal research
More details about each assessment are explained comprehensively in the SQE book.
